Chard and Gruyère Eggs in the Hole:

  • Ingredients - 6 slices sourdough bread, 3 tbsp. Butter, 6 large eggs, 4 oz. shredded Gruyère cheese and 1 bunch (about 6 oz.) rainbow chard, trimmed, chopped. Preparation: - Preheat the oven to 425°F. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
  • With 2 1/2-inch-wide round cookie cutters, cut holes from centres of bread slices. Arrange bread and cutouts on a prepared baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes or until slightly dry, turning bread over halfway through.
  • - In a 12-inch skillet, melt butter on medium. Add chard and 1/4 teaspoon salt; cook 8 to 10 minutes or until stalks are crisp-tender, stirring occasionally. Divide chard among bread slices, spreading around holes. Add egg to each hole; top each with a pinch of salt and pepper. Sprinkle Gruyère over chard and cutouts.
  • - Bake eggs 8 to 12 minutes or until whites are set but yolks are runny. Serve immediately.
  • - You can replace chard with baby spinach, eggs with some charred tomatoes or avocado.
  • - Add some more flavour with mustard and if you don’t get gruyere to change it to a nice mild cheddar or to a Monterey jack.

From same old to brand new

Surprise your mom with these décor ideas and give her bedroom a makeover suited for her personality!

Anglophile - If she loves floral prints, then pull out some soft pastel coloured floral bedsheets and let her relax in the bedroom.

Quirky and fun-loving – If your mom’s style is more quirky and fun, use printed sheets with quirky designs to set her mood.

Bold and bright - If she likes bold and sharp prints, use geometric print bedsheets or choose bright colours for her bedroom.

Classic & Minimal – If she loves classic designs and enjoys minimalism, then pull out her favourite solid colours and make her bed.

Don’t just stop at making her bed. Use some incense sticks to add aroma to her bedroom and play her favourite music to make sure she enjoys her space.

DIY Home Spa

Use home ingredients during this lockdown to give her a spa day but at home!

Honey – Everyone has honey at home and who knew this sweet, dripping liquid is also a great anti-ageing ingredient? Honey is great to moisturise dry skin and it also has many healing properties.

Coffee for longer hair - Soaking your hair in your favourite source of morning fuel can speed up the rate at which your hair grows. To try out this trick, make a small pot of fresh, ground coffee. Cool it and then soak all of your mom’s hair in the coffee. Leave for 10-15 minutes and then rinse off.

Rice Face Mask - A rice face mask is a great way to deep-clean the skin and get rid of shine and oil. Soak a cupful of rice in warm water for 30 minutes to get the starch to rise to the surface, then blend the water with rice flour to form a paste. Then, apply this paste to clean skin and leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water.

Make sure she uses a soft, absorbent towel after an indulgent spa pampering.

A day off with a Champagne

Pop Give your mom a day off and take over most of her chores with all the help you can get from your family. Taking some load off will allow her to relax. Make her feel at ease, so don’t burn down the kitchen or make too much of a mess. She doesn’t need THOSE ‘surprises’!

Here’s some things you can divide between family members - unload the dishwasher, clear the living room and tidy up, make the beds, do laundry, cook up a nice easy lunch and surprise her with some affordable wines if she loves it. Some affordable wines in India are - Fratelli Sette (Rs. 1800), York Sparkling Cuvée Brut(Rs 900-1000), The Wolftrap Boekenhoutskloof (Red, Rs.1675) and Mateus Sparkling Brut Rosé, Portugal (Rs.2400).

A MOMtage

It is said personalised gifts go a long way. They’re thoughtful, they’re full of fun memories and wonderful experiences. And what could be better than a compilation of photos and videos of your mom - a montage. Actually, let’s call it a MOMtage!

Zoom Away!

What better way to make her feel special than connect your mom with her lovely friends! Schedule video-calls for all your mama's friends on this Mother’s Day and be ready with online games that your mom’s girl gang can enjoy and have a good laugh while at it.

Stay together, learn together!

If you want Mother’s Day to be a more quiet experience with just you and her then you can try to take some online classes together. The internet provides several online classes that could teach you and your mom some new skills. So try some online courses on gourmet cooking or baking, gardening, painting or dance.

Bouquet? Never cliche! While a bouquet of flowers is a popular and a classic Mother’s Day gift, this year it has an added significance. A bright, colourful bouquet of flowers can brighten her mood during this gloomy springtime.

Get crafty!

You can always get crafty to give your mom a personalised, DIY gift. Bring out some old photographs of your mom and paint or decorate old photo frames with glitter, beads or threads if you have them already.
